A government like a prodigal son! │© Fola Daniel Adelesi

When a government does not know how to harness the mental power and the huge resources that over 160 million people can bring on board to make it a wealthy nation, then that government can as well be referred to as a prodigal son! We need help and we must shout out because our government is indeed a prodigal son because it is wasting huge and amazing human resources on daily basis! Despite all that we have, the government says that it has so many challenges and in order to meet those challenges the government goes to international bodies to borrow money. When they get to those international bodies they borrow the money in the name of Nigerians and they come back here to spend the money anyhow and nobody can account for all that has been spent or all that has gone missing! Guess what? If you are a Nigerian, no matter how rich you are, you are still a debtor because the government went to borrow money in our names!

There are nations who are bigger than us and there are nations that also have to deal with the issue of cultural diversity so our problem is not the cultural diversity that we have but the fact that we have only positional leaders and not influential leaders! When this nation was founded we had a couple of influential leaders who did a lot for this nation even though they did not have positions! Some of them never even moved close to the government house when they started helping their communities to put infrastructure in place and they were spending their money. Some of them built schools with their money and they put people there without asking them to pay money. They also paid the teachers of those schools from their personal income!

How come we were more prosperous as a nation when we were smaller and did not have all the resources we have at the moment! How come the economic indices that every nation is judged by was a lot better for us when this nation did not know its capacity in terms of population? I guess something went wrong somewhere and we just did not watch it until it slipped and now we have the situation in our hands!

Why do we think that nations like China and India with their population are still succeeding? Why is it that they have so many of the challenges that we have and they are still doing a lot better than we are doing right now? Well, I think the simple reason is that we have a prodigal government and when I say prodigal I am not just talking about wasting the money in their custody! I am referring to a government as prodigal because it has 160 million people as citizens and does not know what to do with it in order to make the nation more prosperous! That is a disaster! The reason nations like China can manufacture nearly anything is because the government of the country has done a lot with empowering individuals and today when countries or companies want to build something, they most likely will think about getting to China to build what they need to build.

We all have a responsibility here and it also begins from our choices of leaders during elections! We need to engage our leaders in some more intellectual ways than just the shabby noise making party that we call a campaign! Our leaders must be held responsible for their inability to be able to maximize the number of its citizens. There is wealth in numbers and our number is to our advantage. We are not the largest country in the world in terms of population! America, India and China are bigger countries and they are doing a lot better because they can take advantage of the population to grow the economy of the nation and ultimately the personal capacity of individuals in the country.

Someone help us! Our government is a prodigal son!
