Did Jesus come to your church? │© Fola Daniel Adelesi

I guess my question is really funny but as funny as the question is, we really need to ask ourselves if Jesus attended our highly ceremonial services where many of us claim to have gone to meet with Jesus. Let me start with you! Yes, you! Did you not go to church to show off your new suits, gowns, lace, shoes, wristwatches or cars in the parking lot? At every slight opportunity you seized the moment to show off! You needed to prove to some others in the church that you are not on the same level with them and you ought to be accorded more respect! Did your pastor not talk about his new trip to the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Dubai, Kenya, South Africa or even Nigeria? You initially felt uncomfortable when you heard such but now, the sermon has been tailored in a way to allow them talk about the flambouyant trips, the luxury hotels they lodged in, the expensive things they bought and they wrap it up in a convincing way for you to see that it was all for the gospel! While it is not a crime to travel around the world, I know for sure that there is a difference between delivering a travelogue lecture and preaching the gospel!

Sometimes you really do not understand the church system anymore and you wonder if Jesus actually came to some of our services. The emphasis of the church has changed! The messages from some pulpits simply exalt the pastors and not God. Even though we pray in Jesus’ name the message does not focus on Jesus. The Bible is being turned upside down in our eyes. People are interpreting scriptures to suit themselves and applying the word when it is convenient!

In some cases, the pastors of the church have become the lords of the church. They have become the alpha and the omega. There is leadership caucus that determines what can happen or what cannot happen in the church instead of having a transparent leadership system of running the church. Just as it is difficult for some companies to do a smooth transition from some leaders to others, we are beginning to have such issues in the church. The Spirit of God is no longer determining who leads the church but the pocket of men or the carnal minds of some leaders. Once you are a favourite of the pastor, you can become the leader even if God has not chosen you!

What about the fornication going on in church today? What do we even say of the ‘gay’ acceptance that is being preached in some churches today? Where do we even start to talk about the financial misappropriation going on in the churches? With all of these things going on in churches, the same people who are doing those things are the people who are calling down Jesus on Sunday mornings! Some people preach and you cannot feel the power of God coming down or you cannot feel that the Holy Spirit is interpreting anything to you from what is being said on the alter. If a message was originally given by God it will not be a problem for the Holy Spirit to interpret it to the congregation, especially if the congregation has the Holy Spirit! Does the congregation even know about the Holy Spirit in these present days? How many people under the gifting of the Spirit, speaking the language of the Holy Ghost and hearing the Holy Spirit speak?

On several occasions some members of the choir sing in some churches and it really looks like they are doing their voice training right there on the stage! You hear voices but those voices do not lead you into the presence of God! What they call worship today just does not sound like worship and sometimes I begin to ask, ‘can’t we go back to those days when healing can be experienced during choir rehearsals?’ ‘Can’t we teach our choristers about the true worship of God where people sing and it is difficult for the pastor to preach because God has taken over? I strongly desire that in my days we will have true worship again! Days when men will worship God and cancer will fly away. Days when people who cannot walk will begin to praise God and they will forget that they cannot walk and suddenly jump out of wheel chairs or drop their crutches!

Let us stop this deceit of weekly church attendance as though the church was another social club that is acceptable to all and sundry. After all you do not go there to drink or womanize but honestly, the church is sometimes the hottest gossip spot!

I know there are places Jesus cannot go to! Remember that Jesus himself asked if He will meet faith here on earth when he returns! Let us ask ourselves if we are running a social club or a faith based church? Are we preparing people for heaven or for hell?

Let me state emphatically that this message is not targeted at any church or any pastor in particular. The message is for all Christians to reflect on instead of engaging in pastor-bashing or denomination-bashing. Again the question is, ‘Did Jesus come to your church?’
