Tradition in the way of Transition │© Fola Daniel Adelesi

Tradition and Transition are two key words in the life of any man on earth. You must recognize the fact that as you grow up you will be learning some traditions and those traditions will become a great part of your life. The other very important part is that when you get to a phase in your life and you need transition, the tradition that you have learnt over the years might get in the way of your transition. I cannot say that we should not leave by tradition because our lives are simply a reflection of tradition in one way or the other but the problem is that too many people do not know when to drop tradition for transition to take place in their lives successfully.

What is tradition and what is transition? The Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary says that tradition is ‘a belief custom or way of doing something that has existed for a long time among a particular group of people; a set of these beliefs or custom. As much as that sounds pretty simple, it is the very reason so many people do not progress in life. The definition says it is a custom and way of doing things. That also means that we can get to a level where we need to change our way of doing things but we might be refusing to change because we have been so used to the old way.

The same dictionary says transition is ‘the process or period of changing from one state or condition to another.’ Transition has to be a process and it must have a period simply because of the tradition which has been our way of doing things for a long time.

When you get into some organizations, business or even religious ones, you will realize that it is hard for the company or some individuals in that organization to move forward simply because of traditions. They already like the old way of doing things. They are afraid of what will happen to them when they change into the new way. As a matter of fact, you will also find that so many of the issues in organizations between team members or superiors and subordinates have a lot to do with taking a transition. People get used to something and they don’t want to let go.

Another way you can easily see the issue of tradition and transition is when someone from one country goes to another country. It can also be someone from a tribe or race going to people from other tribes or races and they just find it very difficult to fit in. In some cases it is not that they do not understand each other but they just will find it difficult to get along because of the differences in tradition.

As an individual, one of the greatest things that can inhibit your transition to a productive lifestyle is your tradition. The only way to make sure that tradition does not get in the way of your changing or becoming a better person, you have to be willing to unlearn some of the things you have learnt and learn new things. When you learn new things, you should also know that some kinds of knowledge are timed and when their time is up, you as the custodian must be willing to unlearn and learn knew things.

Go back and check yourself properly to see how, over the years, you have not been able to make a successful transition in some of the things you want to do not because it is not possible but because you held unto tradition. What is that tradition that is holding you down and not allowing you to make a transition? Spot them! Break them! Move on!
